Squires has lived in Hull for over forty years, steadily publishing collections of his own beguilingly abstract poems together with award-winning translations from Persian and from early Irish. He is certainly one of the three or four most distinguished poets resident in this city since Larkin’s heyday with appreciative audiences in the Irish Republic (from whence he came), the USA and France. Yet as far as the ‘Hull Poets’ industry is concerned he is a non-person, excluded from every pertinent anthology, conference and festival. One of the aims of LegalHighsPress is to redraw the map of Hull poetry to give neglected masters like Geoff Squires their beautiful due.
